UIII Islamic Studies Program

The Faculty of Islamic Studies is designed for opening up professional development pathways for those working in religious and/or academic institutions. This program aims to enable students to become reflective practitioners in both religious and/or academic while facilitating further creative and critical thinking. Meanwhile, our doctoral program in Islamic Studies is designed to produce alumni who are critical both to confessional faith-based and scientific academic scholarships, producing originality. The Ph.D. in Islamic Studies aims to enable students to transform the richness of diverse scholarship and practices into distinct critical knowledge.


MA in Islamic Studies 


The faculty of Islamic Studies at UIII offers a Master's program (MA) for the academic year of 2022-2023. The program is designed to produce experts in Islamic studies, who are able to critically combine Islamic sciences with classical and contemporary approaches through interdisciplinary, multidisciplinary, and transdisciplinary perspectives with a focus on Islam and Muslim societies. Students are encouraged to critically engage with the diversity of academic knowledge constructions and to creatively dialogue these constructions with the changing reality to produce creative and critical thinking. The program employs a critical and analytical approach to the study of Islam and Muslim societies. It is designed to open professional development pathways for those working in academic institutions. It is also intended to serve as a platform for future scholars in Islamic studies to explore diverse discourses and practices that have developed in Islam in order to see their subjectivity vis-à-vis universal Islamic values and thus apply the broad knowledge to praxis.

MA in Takhassus Turath Concentration 


Barnamij Al-Takhassus Fi Al-Dirasat Al-Islamiyya Al-Turathiyya (Special Program for the Study of Classical Islam) is a concentration in the MA degree in Islamic Studies at the Faculty of Islamic Studies, Universitas Islam Internasional Indonesia (UIII). This concentration focuses on classical Islamic studies by analyzing the Kitab Kuning and Turath using an interdisciplinary approach complemented by a competency-based curriculum. It is designed to produce visionary Islamic scholars, researchers, and practitioners who comprehensively understand the Kitab Kuning and Turath while gaining a global perspective and insight. The program aims to establish itself as a center of excellence in classical Islamic studies by developing visionary and relevant Islamic studies that address contemporary socio-religious challenges and problems. The mission of the Barnamij Al-Takhassus Fi Al-Dirasat Al-Islamiyya Al-Turathiyya concentration includes:

  1. Organize education, and conduct studies and research on classical Islamic studies.

  2. Facilitate international scientific and research collaborations.
  3. Undertake groundbreaking assignments contributing to community empowerment and the world of Islamic boarding schools and their sub-cultures.

Ph.D. in Islamic Studies 


The Ph.D. in Islamic Studies program is designed to produce scholars capable of conducting extensive and original research on the formation of Islamic discourses and dynamics of Muslim societies either in the classical or contemporary era through interdisciplinary, multi-interdisciplinary, and transdisciplinary perspectives. Graduates of the Ph.D. in Islamic Studies program are expected to have excellent substantive and theoretical knowledge of Islamic Studies and social sciences and demonstrate an excellent command of research skills required to produce independent and original research in the subject areas of their scholarly interests.
